Opaskwayak Cree Nation Egg Lake Healing and Recovery Centre

Opaskwayak, Manitoba

Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN) intends to develop an evidence-based and culturally inspired addiction treatment and family healing facility to support community members’ long-term recovery. The functional program, schematic design and cost estimates that we prepared provide the basis for OCN’s Chief and Council to pursue funding and approval avenues to help advance the project into development.

The wellness facility plans for one- and three-bedroom accessible units for individuals and their families to live on-site as they move through a continuum of care. Grouped programming components aim to support residents as they transition from detoxification, treatment and recovery to aftercare services, such as mental health, job and school readiness, and other priority programs to aid long-term recovery.

Oriented north-to-south, the facility is nestled within a densely forested site. The north wing houses clinical spaces and program support services to accommodate healthcare staff, emergency care and traditional and western medical practices. The south wing houses the residential quarters, offering kitchenettes, dining and living rooms and direct nature views. A central, double height public space creates an active link between the two wings. From a daycare and indoor playground to a gym, activity and education spaces and social gathering grounds, family members can access amenities that target connectivity, healthy development and holistic well-being.

Expanding into the greater site, land-based healing programs intersect with a gathering circle, nature play space, trail system, boat launch, four-season sweat lodge and other outdoor experiences. The design of the facility and site presents a vision for community healing in a culturally familiar space that acknowledges the role of the family and social relationships in recovery journeys.
