Wilrose Pingol – 2020/21 Mel P Michener Architectural Fellowship Recipient

LM Architectural Group is pleased to announce Ms. Winrose Pingol as this year’s recipient of the coveted University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture, Mel P Michener Architectural Fellowship.  Established in 2002 following Mel’s retirement from the firm he established with Gerry Libling in 1954, it recognizes Mel’s many contributions to the architectural profession through a career that spanned over four decades.  The award is given in the final year of the Masters of Architecture program and recognizes future leaders of the profession.

Wilrose’s thesis topic; “The Feast of an Architectural Space” is a study in “how rituals of dining can generate community interactions and collective happiness to inform the design of public space and exercise capacity building for a minority community.”  Located on a former waterfront industrial site in Vancouver, BC for the Filipino community, this project promotes the active engagement of that community in the design process, through the establishment of Community Partnerships utilizing the common element of the “Feast” to create a culturally relevant destination, that also supports the needs of the broader community.  The project is planned as a series of phased, permanent and temporary interventions, utilizing the skills and resources of the Filipino community and based around the gathering, preparing, and sharing of food, culminating in an annual community feast.
